Sexual violence by strangers in Madrid and Barcelona: a situational analysis.

Sexual assaults, as crimes of special impact and media significance, arouse great public alarm, concern, and interest. Consequently, they are often at the center of the general debate surrounding criminal policies. This means that sexual assaults and its actors -offenders and victims- are not always well evaluated, addressed, and understood outside of criminological, police, and legal circles. Similarly, criminological research itself, as well as the legislative, legal, and penitentiary developments linked to the necessarily controversial topic, often tend to be blurred into theoretical generalities that are difficult to compare and even reconcile with particular facts and cases that, when studied in detail, seem impossible to fit into the general explanatory frameworks available. This study, based on the approach provided by the Situational Action Theory (TAS) proposed by Wikström and colleagues, and focused on the qualitative and quantitative analysis of court rulings issued in the provinces of Madrid and Barcelona, aims to show how the criminal ecosystems in which crimes are committed, in this case sexual assaults perpetrated by strangers, substantially modify their course, as well as the actions of offender and their victim. This fact, properly understood, can be extremely useful as a tool for police investigation and behavioral analysis, as well as for understanding criminogenic events and specific criminal dynamics.
